"These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us."
2 Corinthians 4:17 (MSG)
Come with me for a minute; think of your favorite holiday destination. For some people, it will be Spain, the coast of Africa or a beach resort in the Caribbean Islands.
Imagine you were given an all-expenses-paid trip to your favorite holiday destination, let's say Barbados. The ticket had been purchased, and you received the booking details of the 5-star accommodation. You called ahead and checked the flight booking, and the accommodation references were confirmed.
On the day of travel, you arrived at the check-in counter of the airline; they welcomed you, weighed your luggage and congratulated you because your booking had been upgraded to first-class. You were excited and couldn’t wait to start your journey. In addition, you were given a special pass only available to first-class passengers like yourself; you took a couple of pictures to capture the moment, got into the plane, settled into a luxurious seat, you were given a refreshing drink as the cabin crew got everyone ready for ‘take off.’ Then you heard the following announcement from the pilot in the plane:
“Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome on board this flight 732 MH to Barbados. I am your pilot Mr. Joe Bloggs, myself and the cabin crew is delighted to serve you today. This flight will take 10 hours, and on landing, the local time will be 10 am, and the temperature will be 35 degrees centigrade. However, before we take off and as a matter of airline company policy, I want to inform you that I have not passed my flying test. Many events contributed to me not having my flying license yet, but don’t worry; I am part of an experienced team. All of us will ensure that your trip to Barbados is pleasant and memorable for you.”
Question? What would your response be? Would you be pleased to have a first-class experience, all-expenses-paid trip to Barbados still or would you demand to get off the plane immediately?
It is very likely that you would demand to get off the plane. Why? We expect pilots to have gone through a particular process, completing official training, before we trust them with our lives. Similarly, that is why we only allow qualified physicians to attend to our health, qualified dentists to care for our teeth, qualified teachers to cater for our children’s education, qualified electricians to fix electrical problems in our home and so on. The more qualified the individual, the more we are likely to pay for their service.
This is the same with you. You are precious to God that is why you are here. There is an amazing future that God has for you, and like a diamond, the prerequisite is for you to go through certain processes that will increase your value so that you can be qualified for the future God has for you.
For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
