God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts.
Use them well to serve one another.
1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)
There was a time as a single man when I moved out of home and started living by myself for the first time. I discovered that I experienced bouts of depression at certain periods of the day. I didn’t know what triggered it. One day, as I was feeling depressed, someone came to mind; I picked up the phone and called the person. I sensed that they were having a difficult time too, so I prayed with them over the phone. By the time I finished that telephone conversation, they were inspired and uplifted. But when I dropped the phone, I thought, "Wow, I feel better and not depressed." So, I picked up the phone, and called another person and had the same experience.
Over time I discovered that to overcome depression, I had to look beyond myself and reach out to others. I use the tool of my time and my talent to serve other people. Through that, it emerged that I had grace or at least a gift of encouraging people.
Our gifts will never develop if we keep it to ourselves only, instead of exposing it by serving others. Your talent and ability are God’s gift to you. What you do with the talent and ability through service is your gift back to God.
There is a rewarding internal exchange of joy, inner peace and purpose when you put aside your personal feelings, circumstances, self, and personal gain and reach out to others in service, with love.
