God places the solitary in families and gives the desolate a home in which to dwell; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity; but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.
Psalm 68:6 (AMPC)
The family that we are born into is the starting point for all human contact that we’ll experience in our life time. Everyone that comes into our life has an impact. No contact is accidental; therefore, it is important to understand and appreciate the purpose of people in our lives.
The family that we are born into or the ones we start is peculiar for 4 reasons:
When we consider the lives of key biblical characters and compare them with our personal lives; the people we come across fall broadly into four categories - Coaches, Friends, Fans, and Critics.
Coaches
are authority figures or people whose life and decisions have a direct impact on us. People like our parents, Grand parents, uncles and Aunties (in the family context)
Friends
are mainly contemporaries and mates that are heading in the same direction towards destiny fulfillment e.g. siblings and cousins (in the family context)
Fans
are people that have benefited from our life or what we currently do. In the family context, every member of our family (both nuclear and extended) falls into this category
Critics
are people who push us beyond our comfort zone, many times using the tool of hostility, with little to no concern for our feelings. They are the opposite of fans.
“I’m I safe with my family” is probably not the right question. The right question is “Who are the critics in my family and how can I deal with them?”
On the other hand, to ensure that your family is safe with you; it is important not to be a critic. Yes, we can critic the work and action of the person without hostility but not the person.
