“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT)
Have you ever come across the film called, The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks? Inspired by a true story, the film follows a gentleman from Eastern Europe, coming to America as a tourist. Whilst on his flight, war broke out in his country, and as a result, his tourist visa became invalid by the time he landed at JFK Airport in New York. He was therefore denied entry into the United States of America and could not be deported. So, he was stuck at the airport. It seemed as if one event turned everything against him. However, while there, he achieved a long-held dream to collect one last autograph from a musical hero.
Another film is Sliding Doors, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. The story follows Helen who got fired from her job and rushed home to catch the train after the devastating news. The film splits into two different outcomes, both of which significantly change her life. In the first outcome, she caught the train, only to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman, ending their relationship immediately. The second outcome showed that she missed the train, and several months later found the courage to confront her boyfriend and eventually leave him.
It is easy to identify obvious positive events and see how they contribute to our success in life. We can easily say, "This promotion is working towards my destiny” or “The business contracts I've won are working towards my destiny fulfillment” or, “I'm engaged to be married, and that change is going to impact my destiny positively." However, the truth is that no event is coincidental, including the accidents we have had, the flights we've missed, the train that came late and more.
There is nothing coincidental with anything that happens in our life. Why? Even our arrival into this world (being born) was not our idea. I am reminded of a story – A father took his son to McDonald's for a bite to eat. As his son was about to settle down and have the meal, the father said, "Son, can I have one chip, from your meal?" And the boy answered, "No!".
Many times, we respond to God like this boy. God asks for something little out of a huge blessing that He has given to us. Using the McDonalds’s meal scenario as an example, the meal is our life, and the little chip that God is asking for is an assignment or instruction He has given us. The point is, coming into this world was not our idea but God's idea, our Creator.
So our being alive is not our idea. It is part of God’s plan for the world to experience him through you. Don’t despair about ‘failures’ of the past or gloat in the ‘success’ of the past. Those events were designed to equip you to being a blessing to others. Start today and fulfill your ministry.
“Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations— that’s what I had in mind for you.”
Jeremiah 1:5 (MSG)
